The untimely and unceremonious death of the unsung (web) hero i.e. Google has caused much stirred among netizens. However, the move is nothing unusual, but it has sparked wild speculation among experts because of the swiftness of the move. This decision is surely going to cost Google dearly as far as the revenue generation is concerned, but it seems Google is by and large unfazed by these developments and has directed Google.Cn to Google.Com.Hk to show uncensored search results to its users.
In a post in its official blog, Google has made it clear that it is not willing to compromise with its core policy that rules out any restriction on its search result. But it was a state sponsored cyber attacked that forced Google to rethink its decision to continue its service in mainland China. Though the advertisers are rattled by its decision to quit China, Google is in no mood to compromise with the Chinese Government, which has shown little or no interest in the entire development.
However, a furious Beijing ricocheted sharply immediately after the announcement of this decision. In a riposte to Google, Beijing has directly accused it of transgressing the terms of the agreement that was signed by both parties in 2006. Beijing has so far rejected the claims of organizing cyber attacks on Google by terming it a baseless accusation. But, whatever the fact is, this decision shows Google’s grit and guts. Instead of kowtowing to government censors, Google has taken a strong stance that has to be lauded by all.
Though Google has not moved from China altogether, its presence will be less pronounced in China.
