The introduction of HTML5 and CSS3 has made the Web a lot better. It has introduced new functionalities and has simplified both the web designer’s and developer’s jobs to a certain extent.
Both HTML5 and CSS3 are in their early stages of development and new functionalities are being added regularly. Most browsers also don’t support websites built using CSS3 and HTML5. However, if you want to develop your new site in CSS3 and HTML5, there is nothing to worry. These two are certainly the future of web development, and if you have a fair idea about earlier versions of CSS and HTML, you can play with HTML5 and CSS3 effortlessly.
Features of CSS3
CSS3 is the latest version of Cascading Style Sheet. To help web designers customize the layout of a website more easily, CSS3 has refreshed the fonts, typography and background colors, and gives designers a lot more freedom to play with the look and feel of a website.
- CSS3 introduces @font-face feature. It allows the designer to use custom fonts in the website. To use any font of your choice, you need to upload the font to your server and link it with the CSS file.
- Text content was previously spread over one or maximum two columns. Now you can have as many columns as you wish in the website. You can give the website the look and feel of a newspaper by breaking the text content into columns. You can also customize the column spacing and column width.
- You can add several backgrounds to items in a website with the new feature called Multiple Backgrounds. This will give the website a more vibrant and dynamic look.
- CSS3’s Border Image feature allows swapping any element’s border with an image.
- Now you can add drop shadow effect to text and image using the Box-Shadow feature. It allows you to give both inner and outer shadow and you can also choose color, blur and offset of the drop shadow.
Features of HTML5
HTML5 has revolutionized website design by making the coding process simpler. HTML5 comes with a built in video feature. The main aim behind HTML5’s development was to dethrone Flash; neither iPhone nor iPad from Apple support Flash content. HTML5 will soon decrease the need of a Flash Player to view video content on the web. HTML5 also comes with offline cache facility.
- You don’t need Photoshop to edit an image anymore. The Canvas tag gives you the freedom to craft 2D images and graphics directly.
- Now you can edit any text placed between tags. This new functionality is called Content Editable tag.
- Earlier, you had to include a doctype to inform the browser that it is handling a HTML file. The latest browsers don’t need any doctype to open a HTML5 file. Even if you want to make the website compatible to older browsers, just add doctype and the browser will understand that it needs to open a HTML file.
- HTML5 stores the apps and web pages for offline use.
- HTML5, fully developed, will allow you to play audio and video content without Flash Player or any such plug-in. This will not only change the rules of the web, but offer a better experience to portable internet device users. You will be able to see the trailer of your favorite movie from your iPhone.
HTML5 and CSS3 have made the internet a lot more enjoyable. These two web development tools can make lighter, faster and beautiful websites. Soon, all the browsers will also be supporting the latest features of HTML5 and CSS3. It’s time to start exploring the possibilities yourself!
