Use of left-hand vertical navigation has almost become an obsolete concept in website development industry. However, there are some exceptions to this rule, but those are few and far between. In majority of cases, website designers prefer right-hand vertical navigation as oppose to left-hand vertical navigation. But a radical shift is slowing taking place in web development industry as, an increasing number of website designers are strongly advocating for horizontal navigation. Just a few years ago, a website with left-hand vertical navigation was more prevalent than horizontal navigation. However, designing a website with vertical navigation is a fairly simple process. But it has its flipside. Content of a website gets less importance in a left-hand vertical navigation, as the attention of the viewer is diverted because of the presence of graphical and other elements. But this is not the case with horizontal navigation. Here, the viewers’ attention does not get diverted, as the horizontal navigation system is placed prominently in a website.

Discarding The Importance of Content
Importance of content is accepted universally and unanimously. But in order to make the reader read your website content, you need to create a hierarchical structure that has to be usable as well as readable. Now, this kind of structure cannot be attained in a vertical navigation system. What is all the more surprising is that, often website with vertical navigation fails to dictate its purpose clearly and comprehensively to its audience.

Wastage of Space
Vertical navigation occupies an importance section of a website that can be used for promoting the service in a better way. However, vertical navigation can help a users to find information easily but there is no point of making a website overcrowded for it. Now, an ideal balance can be obtained by opting for horizontal navigation system, which will make it easier for the user to find information and which will not make the website look clumsy or overcrowded.

In conclusion, vertical navigation has its own advantages but its disadvantages have overweighed its advantages to a certain extent. This is the reason why more and more designers are opting for horizontal negation system, which is simple yet sophisticated, trendy yet user-friendly.
