WORLD WIDE WEB

WWW or World Wide Web is a collection of unlimited informations which are extended over numerous computers of the world. In short, it can be explained as a network of computers from all around the world. It is named as the World Wide Web as the network has grown in the pattern of a web.

The World Wide Web and the Internet have often been believed to be the same but it is not the case. World Wide Web is a part of the Internet though it is emerging rapidly.

The World Wide Web being a distributed network does not have a central computer system. Therefore a client can easily access any server on the Web.

The World Wide Web can be categorized into clients and servers. These two categories form a network known as the client-server network.

The clients request informations and handles over the task of displaying the requested informations to the end user. While using a web browser, the concerned browser acts as a client.

The servers, on the other hand, accumulate information as well as process the requests from the clients and sends the requested informations including data, images, sounds as well as texts to the clients. They also send instructions to the client related to the display of these informations in the form of Hypertext Markup Language (HTML).

The majority of the documents of the World Wide Web are coded in HTML. The HTML gives instruction to the client software regarding the display of the document as well as encloses informations regarding the process of linking to the other documents of the Web.

Basically HTML is a kind of authoring software language used to create pages for the Web. HTML being a subset of ‘Standard Generalized Mark-Up Language’ (SGML), for electronic publishing, is the specific standard for the Web.

To navigate through the World Wide Web, the users are provided with hypertext links. By clicking on this link, the user can navigate to another document on the Web. Most of the documents of the Web are interrelated with the help of these links. These links can be set in texts or graphics within a web page. It is a method of implanting an URL into an object so that when that particular object is clicked, the embedded URL finds its web page document.

Every document on the Web contains an address which helps the user to access any kind of information from the Web. The Web browser software uses these addresses for locating and accessing informations on the Web. The address is known as the Uniform Resource Locator (URL).

A Web browser is client software using which; you can access any type of HTML document on the World Wide Web. This software interprets the markup of files in the HTML, sets them up as web pages and displays those pages to the user.

A browser uses HTTP for requesting web servers on the Internet on behalf of the user.
